Fabian and Alex,

You are both part right and part wrong. Price is only one factor for most
people, but not the only.

Prior to becoming an RSP operator myself, I have taken my chances with
unreliable registrars to save some money on the names that don't really
matter too much to me (and how many of those are there? not many -- most DO
matter, that's why you register them in the first place). But I have paid
many times those low fees to be sure of getting the names that DO matter
(most) in the registry with services I knew to be reliable before someone
else beat me to it.

Now the real trick is to offer low prices AND top service and quality. It
can be done, of course, but if you wind up below where the two lines of real
cost and real income cross, you won't be in business long. What that means
for most businesses offering quality service is that they may not be
rock-bottom cheapest overall, but low enough to attract clients and good
enough to keep them. Or they find some other way of skinning the cat, like
volume, targeted advertising, other products (like that value-added
mentioned in Alex's e-mail) etc., etc. (which sounds a lot like the sites
cited in your postings). There is no question that things are moving in
directions that are going to force all of us to become more and more
creative to win and retain clients -- but isn't that what competition and
the free market is really all about?

Good luck, and survival not only to the fittest, but the smartest, too.
