I would never use a whois server to check domain available for the simple
fact that (NSI at least) it is not updated in real time. If you really want
to check the status of your domain (taken/available) at another registrar,
use that registrar's domain registration lookup form as opposed to their
whois. This will tap into the real time registry database and tell you if
the name is available or not.
