We use our merchant account provider for real-time (online/Internet) CC
transactions. http://www.echo-inc.com/
You can POST via SSL directly to their system, or for Unix/Perl there is a
3rd party perl library that does all of nasty formatting for you.
We have been using them for 5 years now for both offline and online CC
processing and have everything integrated with our custom accounting
database.
