establishing time stamp in registry database

Hello all:

Just thinking... this system has got to be designed for real time credit
card transactions in order to avoid disputes over when someone registered a
domain name.

In saying this, I'm making a key assumption:

-- that if you have the Orders set to not be processed immediately, then
someone could, theoretically beat you to a domain name, based on the fact
that if the participating OpenSRS reseller didn't go in and click you
processed right away, then someone else could register the domain. Even if
it took them 5 minutes, you could lose the domain name. I'm assuming that
pending orders are not IN THE REGISTRY until they are processed. If this
is wrong, please, someone correct me.

Therefore, we are taking a huge risk, reputation wise, if we're not
processing in real time, since people are expecting that the FAQ which
states that the timestamp on the registry database for the creation of the
domain record is the determining factor. I'm assuming that gets done when
a domain is processed, not just when it is "pending." If John Doe
registers a domain at 12:15 P.M EST, and you don't process it until 12:30
P.M EST, and someone registers, with another registrar with automatic
processing, at 12:29 P.M EST, then John Doe has lost his domain name, and
would be furious, seeing as he registered it at 12:15.

And, on another note, can someone tell me, please, is the affiliate_id
thing operational right now. That is: can it be used to send the messages
customized to the affiliate instead of the actual domain owner? or does it
go to both? I thought I read somewhere that the affiliate id stuff was
coming in the next version, but perhaps that was an older message I read in
the archives??? Is anyone using this feature right now?

Thanks,

Eric
