You probably do need to be running your own DNS server to do this
efficiently. What we do is use DNS to point the new domain to an existing
server. The index page on this web starts a script that checks a database
to see if there's a redirection target (this lets people have
www.mycompany.com land on www.imTooCheapToPayForHosting.com/~mycompany) If
we don't find a redirection target, we display a generic "This page is under
construction" page.

The trick is in having all new domains appear in DNS pointing to the same
server, which will automatically invoke a script. Also, you'll want to
watch for lame delegations so that you can REMOVE them from your DNS when/if
they choose to move to another hosting company, since your registrants
likely won't give you notice of the change.

Subject: Creating a default page?

Hi,

As we all know, there are quite a few domains registered speculatively.
By this I mean that the registrant has no intention of developing
a site and just wants to sell the domain later on at a profit.

What I would like to do is to point all domains registered at
my OpenSRS site to a "Site registered at..." page which advertises
my site? YOu know, like they do at register.com. Of course,
the registrant is free to move it at any time.

I have a sneaking feeling that I'll need to be running my own
DNS to accomplish this, but it's worth asking, right?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jack
