Given that in practice, the problem at that step is likely to be very
rare, it might not be much of an issue exactly how you do it. But I
would still consider the policies of your credit card processor when
deciding what to do. There might be significant fees and possibly a
negative affect on your account standing and discount rate if you
start doing a lot of returns. Similarly, the exact details of how
you effect an auth/sale combination can make a difference.
Generally, I recommend against recommending anything, because what
holds true for my account with my processor might be completely
different for someone else. The best advice is to carefully examine
the terms of your merchant agreement and go over your statements
in extreme detail until you're convinced it's working exactly as
you expected.
