problems with read and write

I'm having a bizarre problem reading/writing sockets. If I do

while(<$fh>)

or

read( $fh, $buf, $len)

or

print $fh ...

the script freezes. I've been able to work around using sysread and syswrite with no problems, but it can make for messy program logic. Has anybody seen this before?

btw, I'm using ActiveState perl 5.6.0 on Win2K...
