The registration will fail at the end (when the registration goes to the
registry), hence the need to prevent this at the lookup stage.
We're working with the suppliers to give an appropriate error message for
a lookup, and trying to sort out a way to get the server to catch this
(without losing the significant lookup speeds that we gained by bypassing
syntax checking)
