DoWhois introduction

Just posting in case anyone else is interested:

DoWhois is a XML-RPC based whois client. It supports multiple whois
servers and domain types (ie not just com, net, org) and deals with
recursion (whois.crsnic -> whois.opensrs or whois.networksolutions).

There are two real differences between DoWhois and geektools or similar:

1) DoWhois is not designed as the frontend (although a sample frontend
is included), rater it is more a middle interfacing multiple diverse
whois servers (including http based ones) to one or more 'frontends'
with one XML-RPC interface [XML-RPC is an open RPC standard using XML,
much simpler than SOAP. Client libraries are out for perl, vb, php and
loads of other languages - see www.xmlrpc.com]

2) DoWhois supports decoding of the raw whois data into its constituent
parts using filters. This converts from raw whois to individual fields
for owner name, country, nameserver info, etc, allowing further
processing by automated processes (eg we are using it to pre populate
contact form based on a currently registered domain)

DoWhois is released under the GPL and is written in Perl, though because
of the XML-RPC bit can be used from php, vb, etc.

There are already a resonable number of filters available, though more
are always wanted and are being added.

We run a public DoWhois server for those who want to test it or don't
want to install it locally.

See www.DoWhois.com for more info.

Thanks
