Checking for Nameserver Creation on Registries

Now I know there is no current API call for this, and the only way
that I can think of to make this happen is a terrible, evil hack.

The example is as follows. I want to find out if ns1.example.com has
been created as a nameserver in the .com registry. Is there any way I
can do this automatically? Even manually?
