The way I see it, we've fallen short of the open source commitments that
we made many moons ago. This is bad for you guys because its often
really tought to hack on our stuff. Its bad for us because we don't get
to harness the groupthink. And worse, there's no real way for you guys
to tap into that groupthink except by muddling around on the mailing
list hoping someone has stumbled across the right answer. There are a
bunch of things that thought we could do - but most of it focuses on
treating symptoms instead of the actual root cause.
We've decided that addressing the root cause is the best way to do it.
More specific details will dribble out over the coming weeks, but
suffice to say that it includes a two way line of communication, a
renewed commitment to the client code, a recognition that there can only
be one true source and a vague idea that you can help us muddle through
figuring out what that all means.
I'm in the process of getting the requisite resources together
internally and making sure that we've got the right people in the right
spot to make sure that we can make the right things happen.
Hopefully, this isn't too vague - I'd much rather that you hear the
details from someone who can answer the tough questions.
To be concluded...
Feel free to drop me a note in the meantime.
