An update for those interested in running ActivePerl 5.6 on NT:

- First, it *is* possible. :^)
- You are limited to Blowfish_PP for encryption at this time
- If you stick with 522, you're limited to DES for encryption
  at least until tomorrow...

The requirements are outlined in the NT HOWTO at
http://www.atlcon.net/opensrs/nt-howto.htm which has been extensively
updated to match the client V2.0.1 and to account for the differences
between ActivePerl 522 and ActivePerl 5.6.

My optimism earlier this evening was a bit...well...optimistic. Turns out
that what appeared to be a simple fix to the Crypt-DES module problem was
only a cheat to make Perl install the module. Once installed, it would
crash each time you tried to run it. But I did manage to get Blowfish_PP
working properly under ActivePerl 5.6, and have posted a PPM-installable
version on my website. Sometime tomorrow I'll post Blowfish_PP for
ActivePerl 522 in case you want to upgrade to Blowfish encryption.

As the author of the NT HOWTO document, let me first thank you for your kind
words. I am glad to hear it was helpful.

A comment on the use of ActivePerl 522 versus 5.6 (the newest version):
When ActiveState released 5.6 a few weeks ago, I found that the Crypt-DES
and Crypt-CBC modules that I had prepared for download would not install on
the newer version. At the time, I posted a warning about using 5.6 and
recommended that RSPs instead stick with the tried-and-true 522 release.

Just today I identified the change in 5.6 that caused it to be unable to
install the modules, and I have have revised the HOWTO document with
instructions for installing under EITHER 522 or 5.6.

Caveat Emptor: I have successfully installed the modules on 5.6, but I have
not yet tested OpenSRS end-to-end under 5.6 (I'm working on that right now).
I will post another message once I've verified that everything works
properly under ActivePerl 5.6, but the prognosis is good that we'll be able
to use the most current release.
