Except at the registry's whois. Using an old whois client, such as
fwhois, you can get this info:
########################################################################
# fwhois 'nameserver austin.jhcloos.com'@whois.crsnic.net
[whois.crsnic.net]
Whois Server Version 1.1
Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
Server Name: AUSTIN.JHCLOOS.COM
IP Address: 206.224.83.202
Registrar: TUCOWS.COM INC.
Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net
Referral URL: www.opensrs.org
>>> Last update of whois database: Thu, 1 Jun 00 06:31:55 EDT <<<
The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and
Registrars.
########################################################################
A modern client, however, notices the whois server entry there and
tries the lookup at that server, w/o displaying the above:
########################################################################
# whois -h whois.crsnic.net 'nameserver austin.jhcloos.com'
[whois.crsnic.net]
[redirected to whois.opensrs.net]
No match for NAMESERVER AUSTIN.JHCLOOS.COM
########################################################################
Of course, if you are looking up a host record which is under a domain
registered at nsi(registrar), the redirect also fails. Seems the
registry and the registrar cannot agree on the syntax for a host
lookup. (whois.networksolutions.com expects host foo, rather than
nameserver foo.)
But it would still be cool for whois.opensrs.net to do something
useful when given a 'nameserver foo' lookup. It should also provide
a help message when the lookup is 'help'.
