I totally agree with Ross, it would be nice the rate is getting lower.
However, if we are talking about $7-$8 now, next week someone might come
up with $5.0 and $3 or even $1 or free, this will get to the same mess as
few years ago while the domain name can be registered for free. The
service or support will be going down as there are minimum cost of
operation for a good registrar to maintain the level of support and
operation. It is not just the machine cost to running the registration,
but also have to pay good programmers to improve the process as well as
to coordinated with other related organizations to keep all these process
running smoothly.
Cheaper rate is good but not always the best way to approach.
