That's incorrect. Eugene went to jail because he was a twit. Nothing
personal here - but an ass is an ass and that's that. Eugene as part of
his campaign to free the roots ended up rerouting www.internic.net to
www.alternic.net (his site). He did this to show NSI had no idea what
they were doing with respect to the root. So essentially he rubbed their
noses in the proverbial shit. He didn't go to jail for that. It was too
high profile a black eye to the US government.

He went to jail because he did it a second time. After having proven his
point - he went ahead again and redirected www.internic.net to
www.alternic.net. Well that was one time too many for US law enforcement
so he ended up in jail for that. Now I don't know where the man's head
was when he did it the second time. Once was enough. He finally got out
of jail but he ended up putting his family through hell. His wife and
transexual lover were in crisis trying to organize support and his
children missed daddy - so I really have no idea where the mans head was
when he pressed the button the second time.

That's the point - they don't control the roots. The roots can be
controled at any point on the net and many large corps run their own
roots.
