No, they work just like ones from Thawte/verisign. Their CA Cert is
signed by Thawte so it works in older browsers as well that don't have
the equifax CA loaded.

Right, and for some things those are sufficient (or a self signed
one), but for real consumer level commerce, you should have one like
the equifax one, or if you like overpriced stuff, Verisign/Thawte.
