To the best of my knowledge MSIE never see's the 403 response as the server
doesn't send it. Dunno bout you but we were serving over 3 million
re-directs a day using that without a problem. Of course, as always, your
mileage may vary.

Possible, but fallible. MSIE tends to use internal error messages when it
encounters a 4** status. Sometimes - you know MSIE... :)
