OpenSRS will definitely be offering the .name domain to the channel. While
they have signed the contract as of August 1, 2001, in my opinion, I don't
believe that they will be rolling out anything until at least mid September
(and that is a very aggressive estimate) I have been speaking with the
.name registry and they are doing their best to ensure that they stick to
timelines (as per my urging :)) so that we can avoid a repeat of .biz and
.info time changes from both the registrar and reseller perspective.
The above being said...we still have not received any kind of technical
documentation from the registry...and in order to roll anything out we will
be waiting til at least we get an indication from the registry how they will
be running the back end. However you can infer that the roll-out will be
similar to the .biz and .info roll-outs. The registry will be offering both
sunrise and landrush periods prior to the registry live, etc.
OpenSRS will be offering the channel a pre-registration tool (via both the
client and RWI) as soon as possible and will try to give some lead time to
ensure you can collect in advance of the sunrise and landrush periods.
Again, in my opinion I think that .name will be complementary to the
existing TLDs that resellers are currently offering. While .info and .biz
may have a slight advantage in terms of being first to market, .name has a
unique proposition in that it is targeted at personal name registration and
boasts 'digital identity' for people on the net. It should finish a close
third in terms of popularity vs. .info and .biz...and depending on worldwide
internet growth - has the ability to be very successful.
I can't comment on the popularity among RSPs...thats where you guys have to
help me out :) In addition, I am not sure about the value of a third level
domain, but realize that it creates a larger market by doing so...
Anyway - just wanted to give you a brief update. The OpenSRS site will be
updated next week to include FAQ and general info on .name.
Thanks
Rick

And secondly, how many RSPs are actually interested in offering these
third level domains?
Will third level domains under the .name TLD be very popular among
consumers?
