WHOIS is not perfect - but it is a very good indicator.

We still use WHOIS as it typically performs faster lookups than the OpenSRS
Client Lookup.

You are using the WHOIS contact database to check domain availability? WHOIS doesn't have the ability to tell you if a domain is available or not. You will need to use the domain availability lookup function (which is available via the OpenSRS client scripts--in reg_system.cgi) to check if a domain is actually available for registration or not.
