Just change "OpenSRS" to "Verisign Registry" in the above statement and
you will be correct. OpenSRS queries the registry for the expiration date
and uses that in WHOIS output, etc.
I think I know why you are asking this. Some registrars (i.e. Network
Solutions) ignore the real expiration date and ignore any existing time on
your registration if you transfer your domain to them. Just one of the
many ways that NSI tries to defraud their customers (in my opinion).
