The other part of the clue might be in the wording from the quote in the
newsbytes article
"speculator to SNAP up those addresses" - (my emphasis on that four letter
word)
In light of VRSN's current proposal - One wonders what is going on here
(behind the scenes).
Is ICANN trying to beat up on Snapnames? - and stop the VRSN/SNAP monopoly?
Is it a precursor to censuring the registrars (not necessarily VRSN) who
allowed snapnames to do this? - and thus help the VRSN / SNAP monopoly?
If it isn't SnapNames - then is ICANN trying to close them down - and thus
assist the VRSN / SNAP monopoly?

"It appears that the third party has been claiming it offered the best
chance to acquire expired names. Registrars allowing, in violation of
the above provisions, a third party to enjoy the registrars' access to
the registry are responsible for the superior-access claims that third
party makes."
among other lines in the advisory. If this was Cinderella, the glass
slipper would appear to fit....
