Why do you want to release a payed domain?
(I understand that this domain is still payed, just email not functional)
Imagine the worst case, somebody has a heavy car accident together with his
wife.
Of course his friends will take care to pay for the house and insurance,
but maybe they forget to pay for the internet service provider.
So this poor man will have no more email contact.
He recovers after 4 month and will find out, that you have released his
domain
(perhaps you have also informed his competitor about this release
- you made a small snap-back game - the competitor owns now the domain)
Just let it expire. There are lots of domains in the internet with even 12
month
past the expire date.
