Well,

At least Thawte are smarter than to be spammers. Mr Whiffin made some incredible pricing offer to
"make amends" for the spam. It may be hard to ignore the pricing, but I will not deal with another
Verisign-like company. The attitude starts at the top and this sets a precident for low morals.
Just because you can do something such as interogate a company's cert and build a contact database
based on the info- does not mean it should be done.

Sounds like it may be time to amend or apend a copyright notice on the data contained within a cert
(similar to the whois output) to prevent certs from falling into the domain name billing quagmire.
This may also appeal to end users as a (legal) benefit to prevent third party building of marketing
databases and spamming in general.

I can see it now: spam lists of One MILLION e-commerce businesses offered for sale by spammers, for
spammers..... what cruft
