I think it's because there were some well-publicised cases eminating from
Verisign, that Verisign did nothing to fix.

And the Verisign-originated "novalidemail@worldnic.net" (or whatever)
atrocity that probably caused a LOT of people to lose domains because they
never received their renewal notice in time.
