Is it acceptable for an entity to trademark a domain extension? Our country
registrar is attempting to trademark the extension that they manage
(Singapore - .SG) for class 38 (email, network, communications, etc).
I believe that this is inappropriate and I believe that it says so here
http://www.icann.org/icp/icp-1.htm
"(b) TLD Manager Responsibility. TLD managers are trustees for the delegated
domain, and have a duty to serve the community. The designated manager is
the trustee of the TLD for both the nation, in the case of ccTLDs, and the
global Internet community. Concerns about "rights" and "ownership" of
domains are inappropriate. It is appropriate, however, to be concerned about
"responsibilities" and "service" to the community."
Is this an accurate interpretation? Are there any other clearer documents
they are in violation of? If so how can I contact ICANN ? (hv used their
web site address two weeks ago and no response yet) Are there any other
international authorities that I can alert?
The trademark application has passed the advertisment stage.
