All this speculation and I can't help myself but jump in...
For what it's worth here's my 20 cents regarding register.com.
I remember when the Netsol Monopoly ended and new registrars were coming
about. register.com was one of the first and they started calling me. At
some point they finally ran me down and got me on the phone and what I
remember from the conversation is this: The SECOND the person on the other
end of the phone understood that I wasn't registering thousands of domains a
month said that I should go visit their website and that was the end of the
conversation.
It was clear to me that they were skimming for the top volume accounts and
everyone else could "go to their site".
They say time and circumstances change all things. I sincerely hope
register.com have changed their attitude since then.
