>From what I've seen and heard (and I *did* take the survey),
folks are getting all wound up about something that's old
news.

Tucows has made no secret of the fact that they want to
provide the "bedrock" services to their providers on a
wholesale, unbranded basis. The intention, as I understand
it (and keep in mind that I don't work for or speak for
Tucows), is to allow providers to "outsource" the basics
and focus on innovating at "the edges".

This is hardly competing with any of us, although it may
enable some bozo who couldn't otherwise figure out how
to run a DNS server to do something that you already know
how to do, but you've got to admit that there are 10,000
other folks out there (some of them bozos) who are already
"competing" with you in this area.

C'mon, do you really differentiate yourself by how well your
DNS runs, or the spiffy DNS control panel you offer your
customers?

As for "the practices of other registrars," I've gotta point
out that not ONCE has any of my customers been contacted
directly by Tucows to try to bypass me. Tucows goes out
of its way to be as transparent as you want them to be,
and they've made it clear that they understand that my
customers are MY customers. There's no other registrar
in the world that offers a reseller program like Tucows.
None.

>From where I sit, I don't see anything new here, nor does
it appear to me that Tucows is doing anything that they
haven't clearly articulated that they would do.

My $0.02...

I didn't see a survey, but I am annoyed at what I am hearing.
I had a nice conversation with one of the sales reps, and now suddenly
they are deciding to directly compete with us. Perhaps this is just
coincidence.

This sounds an awful lot like the practices of some other domain
registrars......

For the record, I am officially unhappy with tucows now. Apparently some
of my previous comments about our relationship with them are not reflected
by our company's view. If I were to comment now, I'm pretty sure they
would.
