Neulevel was doing it for a while last May with non-existent .biz names.
All they did was insert a wildcard NS record in the .biz GTLD servers to
point all non-existent (or deactivated!) domains to their
"DOES-NOT-EXIST.default-redirect.biz" name server. It in turn provided IP
addresses for the non-existent domains. I just checked today and both the
wildcard record and the name server seem to be history.

I never heard any good argument in favor of it, and there are certainly many
against it. It makes the registry the ultimate "typosquatter", and
depending on how they use the traffic they may end up infringing trademarks
on a wholesale scale. Not to even consider what they might do with the
inside information of which unregistered domain names get how much valuable
traffic. (Of course, those who run the GTLD servers potentially could have
access to those statistics anyway.)

It's just one more data point that suggests we are doing business in a very
sleazy industry.
