Sure. I've done it within the last year, and it worked fine. See
ns1.tigertech.com, ns1.tigertech.net, and ns1.promptdomain.com, for
example. There's no reason why it shouldn't work; there's nothing that
can go wrong if you're simply changing the IP addresses.

I suspect your colleague was thinking of something else, like changing
the *names* of the nameserver hosts (which is more complicated). Or the
fact that Verisign registry used to prohibit having multiple nameserver
hosts pointing at the same IP address. Perhaps he's thinking of that
problem? It's no longer an issue, if so.
