a technical perspective in the process of operating a DNS server.

Yes, spam checks will fail, but that has nothing to do with interfering
with DNS.
I find the arguments about intelligent search belonging in the client to
be flimsy at best -- for myself, it's downright incorrect, as I'd much
rather have server-side search than depend on the variation in clients.
I don't disagree with the political issue on its face -- well, in fact I
do, as I'd prefer to see registration as a tax-supported government
monopoly with competition removed from the mix, but that's not the point
here.
