I'd like to turn the question around: What is the benefit of
continuing with the current official code rather than making the SF
code official?

Would this cause real continuity problems for anyone? Currently each
upgrade is essentially a new install anyway, so for me switching to
the SF code wouldn't be any more hassle than upgrading the RCL code
usually is -- and it would make future upgrades easier.
