The domain redemption period makes no difference in practice to customers
losing domain names.
If they are not going to notice it not working within 40 days they are not
going to notice in 70 days.

What does work, in my experience, is harrassing them by email for 3 weeks
after the expiry date.

A domain which stops working and is then not renewed is likely to not be in
use or they would notice.
If its not in use then a bit of proffing seems to encourage them to renew.

On a general renewal note, our renewal rate has gradually dropped throughout
this year to below 50%.
Part of this might be that 2 years ago we charged less for domains so we had
more speculative registrations, or it could be other factors.
