Hi Greg,

Thanks for that. Ah I love researching trademark law at this time of the
day.

For anyone else looking into this, here is what I have now found out.

It seems that the US signed up to the Madrid Protocol in 2002. This
means that a US trademark registration can be used as the basis for
obtaining an international trademark. I am unsure of this is possible in
the pending stage or after completion.

This is done by completing the International Application form and giving
a basis for the trademark and the countries (from 52 member countries
including France) you wish to cover. This form is then filled with the
USPTO, with a single fee and they handle the rest.

You can find more details here:

Nick,

The trademark must be recognized in France for you to be able to
register it.

I have pasted the relevant section from the AFNIC naming charter
regarding legal entities who may register a .FR name. The last one
would apply in your case

1) whose head office is in France; (or),
2) which possess an address in France which is expressly listed in the
public electronic databases of the registrars of the
commercial courts or the National Statistical and Economic Studies
Institute (INSEE), (or),
3) State institutions or departments, local authorities or associated
establishments, (or),
4) which own a trademark registered with the National Intellectual
Property Institute or own a registered EU or international
trademark which expressly includes French territory;

Here is the link to the complete charter in English:

Hi all,

When buying a .fr domain name you need to produce a trademark recognised
in France. Do they recognise a US trademark registration?

Or is this a bad time to ask considering the recent US Google vs. France
news stories?

Thanks
